Your career in Purchasing: Find the right job now with avitea

For most companies, purchasing is an essential department that often determines success or failure. Purchasing is dedicated to the complex processes of procuring goods and services that are necessary for the operation of a company. Accordingly, it requires qualified specialists who have a deep understanding of the changing dynamics between suppliers, products and the internal needs of a company in order to achieve optimal purchasing results.

What does the purchasing department do in a company?

Purchasing is an indispensable department in every company that is responsible for ensuring the supply of necessary resources. Resources can be of a very different nature - depending on whether it is a manufacturing company and which products it produces. The aim of the purchasing department is to ensure that the right quantity of resources of the right quality are in the right place at the right time - and ideally at the lowest possible price. Decisive factors for this are the location, deadline, quantity, quality and price-performance ratio of the procurement objects.

Purchasing thus enables cost optimization and is responsible for the quantitative and qualitative supply of resources required for operations. A basic distinction is made in purchasing between two areas: operational purchasing and strategic purchasing.

What are the differences between operational and strategic purchasing?

Both operational purchasing and strategic purchasing are dedicated to the procurement of goods and services for a company. However, there are significant differences in their tasks and objectives. Operational and strategic purchasing can be separated from each other, particularly in terms of their time perspective and objectives. While operational purchasing focuses on short-term, tactical tasks such as daily order processing and ensuring deliveries, strategic purchasing is dedicated to long-term, strategic goals such as developing supplier relationships and minimizing risk. Strategic purchasing is also responsible for promoting innovation by monitoring the market and incorporating new developments into purchasing planning. This also includes, for example, evaluating suppliers with regard to aspects such as sustainability, climate protection and social responsibility.

In short, strategic purchasing develops a strategy that is implemented by operational purchasing. In view of the different focus, there are also significant differences in the specific tasks and areas of responsibility of the two sub-areas:

  • Determination and optimization of order quantities
