How to find exactly the right job

Indeed, Stepstone, Monster & Co. - the jungle of job boards is becoming increasingly difficult to penetrate. At the same time, many companies offer their own online career sites and applicant portals. Anyone looking for a new job online needs a lot of patience and - above all - a strategic approach. Strategy, organization and flexibility are key to keeping track of the multitude of job offers, job exchanges and career websites. To help you find your new dream job with as little effort as possible, we have put together the key tips for a successful job search in a nutshell.

Our 6 tips to make your job search a success

The first question when looking for a job is: Which positions are suitable for me? Once you have identified suitable positions, the next challenge is to convince your potential employer. Follow our tips and tricks to help you land your dream job.

1.       Be clear about what you want

Before you enter the depths of the job jungle, you should be clear about what exactly you are looking for. Which positions are of interest to you? In which area do you already have experience? Or perhaps you want to try something completely new? Are you only interested in certain sectors? Please also note that job titles often vary greatly these days. Many jobs have generic English titles that do not always reveal what they entail at first glance. A look at the detailed job description can help. You should also think about your salary expectations and other requirements in advance. Would you like to work remotely or would you prefer a hybrid model? The more clearly you define your expectations, the easier it will be for you to filter out the right job offers for you.

2.       Use job boards and career websites correctly

In addition to the usual job boards such as Stepstone and Indeed, you should also use professional networks such as LinkedIn or Xing. It is not uncommon for companies to search for new talent here. To ensure that the so-called "headhunters" or recruiters become aware of your profile in the professional networks, you should attach great importance to a well-maintained profile. Many (especially larger) companies also offer their own applicant portals. These are particularly easy to use if you have maintained your application documents individually as PDF documents, but also in a single PDF, so that you can then easily store them in the various portals depending on the requirements.

3.       Optimize your CV

Whether in the job networks or in your personal application documents, the CV is the central element of your application. Both your online profiles and your PDF CV should therefore always be up to date. It is also an advantage to highlight the key stages of your professional career for your desired job. This can be done graphically, but also by adding important details. Don't just list the title and period of your previous positions, but also directly include relevant tasks and responsibilities. This will give recruiters a better picture of your qualifications at first glance. Make sure you also emphasize in your CV why you are the right person for the advertised position. Do you have a particular hobby or do you do voluntary work? This information should definitely be included in your CV. They give the recruiters an insight into your personality and provide something to talk about during the interview.

4.       Engage in active networking

In addition to the usual online platforms, there are often industry or job-specific meet-ups or other networking events, especially in large cities. Here you can get to know people who work in the same industry or in a similar position. Connect with employees from companies you are interested in. It is not uncommon for this to result in promising opportunities for you.

5.      Apply proactively (unsolicited applications)

Have you come across a company that meets all your requirements and wishes? But the company does not have a vacancy for you? Don't be afraid to send an unsolicited application. Showing interest in a particular employer goes down well. The HR department may have a vacancy up its sleeve or you may be earmarked for the next open position.

6.      Stay organized and active

If you are currently in an active application phase and have already written several applications, the job search can quickly become confusing.Tip: Create an overview (e.g. in Excel) which contains the status of the applications you have already sent out, including the contact details of your contacts.Don't be afraid to carry out regular follow-ups.Are you still waiting to hear back from the company?A quick call or email can't hurt to ask about the current status of the application process. This once again underlines your interest in the position and the company.

With these tips, your job search is sure to be a success. Always stay organized. Nevertheless, maintain a certain degree of flexibility so that you can adapt to changes and play an active role in your own professional development. If you know what you want and actively pursue this goal, nothing will stand in the way of your dream job.
